The Brain of a Child with Autism
At one point in time, doctors believed that autism was a psychological condition caused by environmental factors, especially the parenting style of the mother. This stigma caused distress for parents of children with autism and prevented effective treatment. Thanks to a series of studies, doctors finally discovered that autism is a neurological condition that starts in the pre-natal period. This removed the blame from parents’ shoulders and encouraged the development of new treatments.
In this video, find out how the brain of a child with autism differs from that of a person without autism. You will hear how abnormalities in the limbic and cerebella portion of the brain may be behind autism. You will also see positive proof that autism doesn’t have to prevent a child from living a full life.
